Afterschool Activities and Events

Schools are hubs for the community, often bustling with activity for hours after the last bell. Afterschool clubs, concerts, plays, sporting events, and family nights offer an opportunity to provide extended learning, communicate with families, and share the school’s commitment to healthy eating and physical activity with a wider audience.

Healthy Afterschool Ideas:

  • Offer afterschool clubs based around gardening, cooking, or physical activity.
  • Hold open gym time for families before the evening events.
  • Explore ways to make school facilities available for afterschool family physical activity.
  • Include grab-and-go fruits and veggies in your event snacks (clementines, apples, or packs of baby carrots).
  • Stock concession stands with healthy snacks.
  • Provide water dispensers or bottled water at all events.

Additional Resources:

  • Start a conversation about healthy foods and activities at school events with the Healthy Family Events presentation.

Wellness Policy

Check your school district’s wellness policy for guidelines on foods, beverages, and activities that can be provided afterschool. If the district policy does not cover afterschool activities, work with your fellow teachers and administration to develop a healthy afterschool activities policy for your school.
